To the Indigenous people of the Amazon, the relationships between human and non-human species are significant. Plant species are considered powerful, spiritual beings that can be communicated with through the singing of icaros. The plants teach icaros to the apprentice. The songs, chants, and whistlings are a translated plant language for humans to understand. Each icaro is specialized toward a specific plant or animal spirit that will serve a specific purpose. Within the community, icaro singers may be admired or sometimes feared for it is known that icaro songs also have the ability to curse, as well as heal.
